Harbor Freight Tools had a sale the other day and ... of course ... I had to attend the event. To my surprise, they had these dollies on sale real cheap. I had been trying to figure out a good way of transporting my submarine to and from the lake or pool ... taking into consideration the weight and size. So ... as you can see ... I´ve decided to construct a trailer type arrangement with wheels on both ends. The dollies have been bolted together with a center wooden support block added. I will be able to lift either end and roll my sub along. I will also add a cradle of some sort ... so check back and see the updates to this page. |

I decided to manufacture the cradle sections for my dolly out of poplar wood from the local home improvement store. It is knot free and easy to work with. Here, you can see me cutting the first piece on my band saw. |

After cutting the half circle for the lower hull and the notch for the keel, I drilled two (2) - 1" holes on either side for the dolly-pipe side rails. Next, I cut the cradle sections down both sides with the table saw, through the holes and just wide enough for the dolly rails. |
| I tested the first cut piece on the dolly to ensure my measurements were correct. This is one of the two (2) center sections (see the keel notch), but it will eventually be mounted in the middle area. There will be two (2) cradle sections with notches and two (2) without notches. |
A closer view of the first, cut cradle section. These will be mounted on the dolly and secured with screws through the pipe on either side. |
| These two (2) pics show the cradles mounted in place and then sprayed with Krylon® paint to match the dollies. Notice the two(2) center cradles with the notches for the keel. |
The next step will be to install carpet or foam rubber to prohibit the cradle sections from scratching the hull. On a side note ... the dolly system fits perfectly in the rear of my pickup with the tailgate lowered. Just two (2) straps will be necessary to hold it in place ... and then I´m off to the lake! |
