Los Angeles Fireboat 2
MAIN DECK

Part 1 - Layout / Materials

Here is a bow view of what will be the Main Deck. This structure connects directly to the hull and supports the entire superstructure.

I decided to build the Main Deck using Celtec (or Sentra). Celtec is a PVC material in sheet form that is a wonderful material for model building. You can saw it, sand it, drill in it, bend it (with heat), glue it, paint it and even submerge it in water as it is waterproof.

I get all of my Celtec from a local company; Norva Plastics, Inc. (visit their web site from my Links page). The company has a very large inventory of this material in various sizes and colors, and the people there have always been very professional and helpful.

If you are a model builder, I recommend Norva Plastics, Inc. for all of your Celtec needs!
I decided to manufacture the main deck using both 6mm and 8mm Celtec. The bow section (8mm) is raised from the aft section (6mm).

The pink foam (hull blank) is being used as a temporary support until the deck is complete.

I´m anticipating using a bolt or pin system to secure the deck, therefore I drilled several 9/16" holes about 2" deep in strategic locations around the lip of the hull.

The red, electrician´s tape you see was applied to keep any resin from dripping down. Next, I poured resin into the holes and around the lip for additional reinforcement. The resin holes will allow me to tap bolt holes in the event they are needed.

If I decide to use pins instead of bolts, smaller holes will be drilled into the resin holes to accept the pins.
