HULL CONSTRUCTION

Part 2 - Gluing and shaping

Prior to gluing the sections together, excess material was removed from both the top and bottom by simply using a single edge razor blade.

The sections were then glued together using epoxy resin (WestSystems) and a disposable paint brush. Mix the resin, pour it onto one foam section at a time, smooth the resin out with a brush and then place a weight on top when all sections are glued together. You only need resin on one side of each section, not both. I let the entire block sit overnight before the next step.
Here, you can see the outline of the hull shape has been drawn onto the side of the foam block.

You can also see the excess material has been removed from the top of the block.
Here, you can see the excess material has been removed from the bottom of the block.
After drawing the side view on both sides of the hull and marking the centerline on both the top and bottom, it was time to begin removing excess material. Stanley® makes two wonderful tools that make this step very easy. The SurForm® Pocket Plane and the SurForm® Hand Plane are light weight and easy to use. Stanley® also makes replacement blades for both if they ever wear out.
After shaping the underside of the bow and stern, I took a break and snapped some pics. Next, I'll shape the top side of the hull using the same tools.
