AERIAL LADDER

Part 4 - Boom Spindle

I went to my local Home Depot store searching for parts to make the spindle. I located the major ones in the plumbing section. I purchased a 1 3/4" PVC connector and a 1 3/4" PVC end cap. Here is the connector.
The end cap will be used as the bearing or swivel point. It fits perfectly inside the connector with very little play. A small amount of sanding was necessary to remove the molding pins on the cap itself.

As you can see, I added two pieces of Celtec material for the upper part of the end cap. The Celtec was glued to the end cap, and then small .080 hex bolts and nuts were added around the edge.
Plastruct rod was used to fabricate the railing and ladder steps for the spindle, and they were simply glued into place.

Celtec was used for the boom axle braces. These will be further refined prior to painting.
I haven´t done it yet, but the PVC connector will eventually be bolted to the Main Deck for easy removal. It is stationary and doesn´t have to swivel.
Many other details have to be added to the spindle and boom, but here it is so far. I think it looks pretty good!
